Highlights

  • 2026 NASCAR Cup Series short track tire testing begins this week
  • Drivers Wallace, Bowman, and Preece participate in Goodyear tire tests
  • Short track package debuts with 750-horsepower tapered spacer
  • Next test planned at North Wilkesboro for further technical changes
  • NASCAR aims to balance tire wear and performance amid temperature swings
  • New ECU and data logger by McLaren to be tested in 2026

NASCAR begins 2026 Cup Series preparations this week with a two-day Goodyear short-track tire test at Bristol, targeting a stable tire platform and a revised short-track package.

Bubba Wallace for 23XI Racing, Alex Bowman for Hendrick Motorsports, and Ryan Preece for RFK Racing represent Toyota, Chevrolet, and Ford.

Recent events exposed volatile wear windows, from conventional stint lengths to sets fading after 30–50 laps. Cooler conditions limited rubber adhesion, inflating pace deltas while undermining predictability.

The test debuts a 750-horsepower tapered spacer, up from the current 670-horsepower target, to study throttle application, corner entry stability, and passing potential on short tracks.

750-horsepower spacer debuts as part of the 2026 short-track package at Bristol.

Goodyear will cycle multiple constructions and compounds, aiming for a tire that resists overheating yet rewards management, regardless of ambient or track temperature.

Those extremes were seen most clearly at Bristol on September 13.

A follow-up at North Wilkesboro is planned to explore additional car changes that could further unlock short-track raceability.

NASCAR and Goodyear target consistent wear after races with 30–50 lap fall-off in cool conditions.

Since 2022, the Next Gen car improved intermediates but remained aero-sensitive on flat shorts and road courses. Trailing cars struggle in dirty air, limiting momentum builds and attacks.

Drivers want the wake reduced. Christopher Bell has argued for Xfinity-like characteristics and even narrower tires, noting current cars slide excessively given the tire grip and power balance.

With diffuser-led downforce, the car sits tail-down and nose-up, stabilizing the leader while making the follower harder to rotate and free on corner entry.

McLaren ECU and data logger evaluations are slated, modernizing control systems for 2026.

NASCAR will also evaluate a new McLaren ECU and data logger, seeking improved reliability, data resolution, and parity checks for the 2026 rollout.

Crew chiefs are split on solutions. Paul Wolfe expects modest gains from power alone, but believes combined tire, engine, and small aero steps can materially lift race quality.

NASCAR has not finalized the North Wilkesboro plan or participant list. The short-track package will continue to iterate as 2026 approaches.
