Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu has rejected suggestions Oliver Bearman’s rookie season has been free of lows, despite a headline fourth place in Mexico City.

Komatsu cited six super licence penalty points, including overtaking under a red flag and a pit-lane collision during a red flag, as clear markers of costly inexperience.

“How much lower can you go?” — Komatsu on Bearman’s red-flag errors.

Bearman has delivered 32 of Haas’s 62 points across 20 races, outscoring Esteban Ocon, but Komatsu insists raw speed must be paired with discipline.

Two penalty points were removed before São Paulo, easing the immediate race-ban threat but reinforcing the need to tidy execution throughout the weekend.

Bearman has six penalty points this season, with two struck off before São Paulo.

Komatsu’s priority is consistency in qualifying. Incidents in practice or qualifying wreck grid position, which is decisive for a Haas fighting in a tightly compressed midfield.

Mexico underlined that point. Running in clean air let Bearman manage tyres and tempo while faster cars fought traffic, protecting his track position and converting pace into result.

Clean air, not outright pace, underpinned Bearman’s Mexico City fourth place.

Oscar Piastri exemplified the difficulty. In a quicker car, he spent long spells bottled behind rivals, highlighting the premium on starting ahead rather than passing through the pack.

With races remaining, Haas wants fewer errors and stronger Saturdays. Bearman’s progress now depends on blending aggression with restraint to maximise starting spots and protect race prospects.

🚩 Impressive results can’t erase dangerous rookie errors.
To climb the rankings, Bearman must turn daring flashes into rock-solid consistency.
