Liberty Media has confirmed a leadership transition, with chairman John C. Malone stepping down on January 1, 2026, and vice chairman Robert “Dob” Bennett set to assume the chairmanship.
Malone ends more than three decades steering the company’s board, but remains Chairman Emeritus, retaining a significant shareholding and strategic advisory role.
He frames the timing around a simplified portfolio and robust operating businesses, arguing the foundation is sound for an orderly handover.

Bennett brings continuity. He has served as a director since 1994, sat on the executive committee for over 15 years, and became vice chairman at the start of 2025.
He credits Malone’s mentorship and influence, while committing to sustain growth and execution through the transition. The board collectively thanked Malone for longstanding service.
For Formula 1, the message is stability. Liberty Media continues to manage the sport’s commercial rights into 2025, with operational continuity expected during the leadership change.

On track, competition remains intense, with Lando Norris, Max Verstappen, and Oscar Piastri contending, and McLaren leading the constructors’ standings heading into 2025.
That backdrop underscores the value of governance consistency for sponsors, promoters, and broadcasters, particularly as calendars expand and event economics face greater scrutiny.
From an investor perspective, Malone’s Emeritus position retains institutional knowledge while ceding day-to-day oversight, reducing transition risk and supporting long-range strategic continuity.
Practical governance remains unchanged in the near term. Management continues daily operations, with Bennett leading board oversight and setting priorities ahead of the 2026 handover.
No shift to Formula 1’s rights ownership model is signalled. The focus stays on commercial performance, market growth, and event execution through the 2025 season.
