McLaren ends its contract with junior driver Alex Dunne with immediate effect, ahead of the final two Formula 2 rounds, citing divergent views on his future career direction.

Dunne joined the McLaren Driver Development Programme in 2023 during his rookie season in Formula 3.

He steps up to Formula 2 this year and delivers two wins, two poles, and seven podiums, placing fifth in the standings with two events remaining.

McLaren says the collaboration ends on respectful terms, emphasising the value of his progress under its programme.

“McLaren Racing has ended its contract with McLaren Driver Development Programme member Alex Dunne… to have been able to contribute to his success and growth as a driver.”

An immediate split signals a strategic misalignment rather than performance concerns, a familiar risk inside junior pathways where resources and timelines demand clear, shared objectives.

Dunne gains early F1 mileage, testing the McLaren MCL60 at Zandvoort in May, then impressing in Austria FP1 with the fourth fastest time, narrowly behind championship leader Oscar Piastri.

Fourth fastest in Austria FP1, within a tenth of Oscar Piastri, underlines Dunne’s raw pace in F1 machinery.

He adds another FP1 outing at Monza last month, reinforcing his credentials while completing a busy debut year in F2.

On Instagram, the 19-year-old confirms a mutual separation and thanks McLaren for enabling his first F1 laps and two FP1 appearances.

“From today, I’ve mutually decided to part ways… To have my first opportunity to drive an F1 car, followed by two FP1 sessions, is something I’ll always hold very close to my heart.”

With two F2 rounds left, Dunne targets results while evaluating next-step opportunities across motorsport markets and series.

For McLaren, the change leaves its Formula 1 focus untouched; it leads the 2025 constructors’ race, with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris running first and second in the standings.

The episode underlines how development programmes must align driver aims with team priorities, an emphasis that will sharpen as new regulations reshape pathways towards 2026 changes.
